A new $800-million data center is being constructed in Kuna, ID and is expected to be in operation in 2025.  The data center will be supported by 100% renewable energy from new resources connected to Idaho Power’s system, and required a new transmission line to tie it into the grid.

Crux was selected to install drilled pier foundations to support monopole structures on the new line.  A total of 12 foundations were installed, ranging in diameter from 5 to 8.5 feet and in depth from 13 to 23 feet.  Crux also provided concrete Quality Control and break strength testing.

Bedrock was encountered at approximately 8 feet below ground, requiring between 25 and 50 four-inch perforation holes drilled to depth per foundation to weaken the material.  Challenges included working under existing energized lines, requiring coordination with Qualified Electrical Workers during crane-supported rebar setting activities.  Additional challenges included a significant freeze-thaw cycle, which limited site access in the afternoon hours due to muddy conditions, and efficiently accommodating nearby mining operations, which also limited access due to offroad truck traffic.

Quality reports were submitted electronically to the client on the day of concrete placement, allowing for quick and efficient communication to both the client and the owner.  In addition, the project owner was exceptionally complimentary of Crux’s safety standards and procedures throughout the project.
